3 Things To Do BEFORE You Set Your 2020 Goals

2020 is right around the corner and now is the time to start getting those goals and plans of action ALL the way together! But listen, before you even think to write your goals or create your vision board, there are 3 things that you’ll want to do BEFORE you set those goals. You’ll wanna make sure you do these 3 steps to ensure that you do not waste time setting and pursuing goals that are not in alignment with what you desire. I know, it sounds silly, like why and how could someone possibly do such a thing? But, trust me, it happens. People set goals that do not correspond what their dream life. Often times people make the mistake of not setting the right kind of goals and therefore give up before seeing it through to completion. Of course, there are many reasons why people give up on their goals and dreams. But, what I know is that IF you have the right PLAN – a strategic plan in place, then you’ve automatically got a better shot at achieving – SLAYING your goals than the person who does not. Shoot, you have a better chance at achieving your goal, just by writing them down vs an individual who doesn’t. But, we all know that what it really comes down to at the end of the day is ACTION. Regardless of the goal being written down or not, the person who takes strategic action that is in alignment with his/her goal is the one is MORE likely to achieve their goal. By completing the following steps, you can ensure that you are setting a goal that you are not likely to give up on. Why? Because, that goal will be based on 3 core concepts that will be a steady foundation to support your pursuit. Go ahead, read that again!

I know, setting goals and the creative process of designing a vision board can be very enjoyable! But, it means nothing if it does not come as a result of the 3 steps that I am about to share with you. And, my best recommendation is to complete the following steps in order.

1. Visualize what you want. I won’t go into detail on this one. Instead, I’ll share with my favorite visualization exercise that will help you dig deep and really gain clarity on what your ideal “dream life” looks like.

2. Identify what you want. After you have visualized what you want, take it a step further by clarifying exactly what it is that made your “dream life” your dream life. Whatever you identify is what your goal will be centered on. For example; if your dream life looks like you no longer working a 9 to 5, running your own start-up company and working from home, having financial freedom and time then your goal will be in alignment with that. See, your goal(s) will be a bit smaller than the overall picture that you visualize. The key is get as specific about what you want as possible. So, for the example above, your goal might be to start a side hustle, as that would allow you to generate more income that could eventually allow you to retire from your 9 to 5 and work your side hustle full time, which would allow you to set your own schedule, etc. See how that works?

3. Identify your WHY factor. This is the single most important step. In fact, even if you were to skip steps 1 and 2, which I am not encouraging, you would still have a pretty good foundation for slaying your goal. Here’s why: I say this often; motivation is temporary. Your WHY factor is what will remain constant throughout your pursuit to achieve your goal. It may take you 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year maybe more – less or somewhere in between. However long it takes you to achieve your goal, you can pretty much guarantee that at some point you will experience a lack of motivation, etc. You won’t always feel like taking the necessary action to manifest your dream. Your WHY factor is what will keep you motivated to keep going, regardless, because your WHY is the reason why you want to pursue the goal in the first place. Maybe it’s to give back to the community, create a better life for your family, maybe you just want to be healthy and happy.. Whatever your WHY is, make sure that it is BIG enough to override any limitation/limiting belief that may discourage you from continuing on your pursuit. Your goal and dream is worth it, and your WHY factor should validate and motivate you every time!

You have what it takes to pursue your goal, manifest your dream and live your life operating in your God given purpose. But, without a strategic plan of action, you aren’t setting yourself up for success. By visualizing and identifying what you want and identifying your WHY factor, you are giving your self a better than best shot at achieving your goal!
