3 Steps to Combating & Conquering Perfectionism: So You Can Stop Waiting and Start Slaying Your Goals

Is perfectionism preventing you from achieving your goal?

Maybe you’ve been wanting to publish your first book or launch your first business. Maybe, you been thinking about starting a podcast or changing careers.

Whatever your dream is, you’ve been putting it off because you don’t feel like you are ready, qualified or good enough. Or, you don’t believe your product or service is PERFECT.

The first thing I want you to know, is that I understand. So, everything I am sharing with you today, comes from a place of personal experience.

I’ve been blessed to write and publish 3 books, start a business and changed careers, less than 1 year ago, all of that, while being an over-thinker. I over think almost EVERYTHING; especially when it comes to potentially LIFE CHANGING decisions.

Not only that, but I love to PLAN. I get almost as much enjoyment in the process of planning as I do, the final result. However, therein lies the opportunity to overthink which for me, often leads to wanting to perfect whatever the task is at hand.

In order to reach the stage of RELEASE, I had to learn to push past my FEARS of IMPERFECTION and release my self and my gifts.

If you want to combat and conquer PERFECTIONISM you are going to RELEASE.

You must give yourself permission to be great. No one can do this for you.

Of course, it’s sounds simple, but there’s a few things you’ll need to do so that you CAN release, combat and conquer!

Tip #1

KNOW YOUR WHY. Here are two questions that you should ask yourself:

What is my WHY factor? (My overall reason for doing what I do)

Is my why BIG enough?

Your WHY should be greater than your insecurities and your limiting belief; any reason you use to justify not taking action… not stepping out on faith, not launching the biz or book, not stepping outside of your comfort zone and going for what you really want.

If your WHY is not big enough, then go back to the drawing board and list ALL the ways that you accomplishing your goal will impact you, those you love AND what will happen IF you do not accomplish your goal.

The benefit of knowing your WHY and having a WHY that is greater than your desire for perfection is that it will motivate you to KEEP GOING. You WHY should motivate you! It should persuade you to take strategic action!

Tip #2

FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER. In January, I joined a mentorship program so that I can 1) Be mentored by someone who is already levels above me, doing and succeeding at what I desire to do AND 2) To be surrounded by like-minded individuals, who are more-so on my level, but are striving to higher heights as well. With this mentorship program comes assignments, meetings, deadlines and social interaction. Altogether, this works to hold ME accountable to the goals that I set at the start and am working toward. We hold each other accountable and my mentor, the coach, holds me accountable as well. I share all that to say this, find yourself SOMEONE; be it, a coach, a mentor, a friend or family member.. Find someone to hold you accountable for your actions or non-actions as it pertains to the pursuit of your goals. Find someone who will not only tell you what you WANT to hear, but what you NEED to hear as well. This could be a game-changer for those of you who having been going at your goals without a support system.

Tip # 3

SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE. The ultimate key to combating perfectionism IS shifting your perception of your imperfection.

I know, here I go again talking about shifting your MINDSET. But, literally, I talk about it all the time, because it is the game-changer for just about everything in life. Most importantly, your ability to achieve your goals.

So, what you want to do is shift your perception, so that you see your imperfection, problem or disadvantage for what it can be.

See your disadvantage as an advantage. And advantage to attract YOUR ideal audience or clients. An advantage to be relatable. See it as an ASSET.

It can be the one thing that makes you stand out or noticeable in a crowd or in an oversaturated market. And, it can be what ATTRACTS what is ideal for you, to you… Ideal clients, ideal opportunities, connections, etc.

It CAN be, IF you SHIFT your perception, embrace the flaws and allow it to WORK for you!

Your IMPERFECTION could very well be your superpower.

How to Adjust to Your New Normal, Without Quitting Your Goals

This pandemic has effected us in so many ways. It has forced us as to adjust to a new normal. Even though our new normal is temporary, it’s safe to say, there are some aspects of our day to day living that will never be the same. Right now, most of us are living outside of our comfort zones, because we have to. Some of us have found ourselves in scenarios where we have to think outside of the box. We are all being impacted by Covid-19 in some type of way.

Aside from the obvious impacts economically, physically and socially, this pandemic has impacted individuals as it relates to their goals. Many of us began the year off feeling motivated and optimistic about the exciting opportunities 2020 would bring! However, many of us are now looking at our dreams and feel hopeless, because of everything that is going on in our world today. And while, even I, as a Goal Success Coach harp on how essential it is to anticipate and plan for potential setbacks upfront, none of us could have anticipated such a disturbance such as this coronavirus. I get it. I’m in this thing too. I came into 2020 with high hopes and big dreams and this pandemic as definitely disrupted my plans and has had me feeling a little.. lost.

Despite how discouraged this setback has caused me to feel at times, I am not giving up on my 2020 goals and I encourage you not to as well. Instead of giving up on your dreams, pivot.. You can get to your destination, but you’re going to have to take another route. My friend, there is opportunity in taking an alternative route. Even if it’s the long way, that simply means there’s more opportunities to learn and grow from. Shift your focus so that you can see this as a blessing in disguise.

Don’t give up on your 2020 Goals.. Instead, Pivot. Take time to shift your mindset and focus your attention on your action plan. This will allow you to become aware of opportunities that you would not see otherwise.

Step 1: Pause. Be still and breath. Allow yourself to feel the emotions; cry if you need, scream if you need to. Just be in the moment and feel. Feel the frustration, the discouragement, the anxiety.. Accept the moment for what it is.. A moment, that will eventually pass, making way for more positive and enjoyable emotions. A great way to pause is by meditating or practicing mindfulness.

Step 2: Identify alternative routes; solutions and resources. Go back to the drawing board.. that’s your vision board, your vision book, your written goals and plan of action. Explore different options, see what you need to adjust. Don’t give up on your goal just because plan A didn’t go as planned.

Take time re-adjust. Re-adjust your attitude, your mindset and your plan!

Going forward, when you set your goals and create your action plans, create in with FLEXIBILITY in mind. Meaning that you identify possible limitations and limiting beliefs upfront. Identify possible solutions, alternative and resources that may come in handy. Anticipate possible setbacks and disruptions so that your plan of action is setback and disruption-proof!

Don’t give up on your 2020 goals! We still have 3 quarters left in the year. This is the time where you should be reflecting on quarter 1 and re-adjusting as needed, anyway!

How to Unplug and Hit Reset on 2020

You said 2020 was going to be your year . The year you will finally take a leap of faith and pursue your dreams. But so far, most of us wish we could unplug 2020, wait 20 seconds and plug it back in again. I mean, on top of our own excuses, Jan – March alone has given us a few more reason to feel discourage and to procrastinate.

But, I encourage you to consider this..

You CAN unplug and hit the reset button on 2020.

Yes, you read that right. You can unplug and hit the reset button on 2020.. It begins with YOU make a conscious decision to SHIFT your mindset.

You can shift your MINDSET by:

1) Changing your focus. Focus more on the positive things in life and less on the negative .

HOW:

  • Set limits. LIMIT the amount of time you allow yourself to indulge in the news via social media and television.
  • While practicing social distancing, THINK about the individuals and environments in your life that are TOXIC and consider how you have distance yourself from those people or environments even after this current challenge has calmed.
  • JOURNAL daily to help you release, become aware of and to process your thoughts and emotions.
  • MEDITATE daily to help gain CLARITY and CONTROL aka AWARENESS of your thoughts. That way, you will recognize when negative thoughts bombard your mind and then replace it with a positive thought. And then, in that moment, continue to meditate on that positive thought.

Shifting your mindset is really just shifting your focus, by shifting your thoughts, over and over again. It sounds like an easy concept at surface level, but please hear me on this.. It takes work. It takes consistantcy. Sometimes, you have to do the DIRTY work to gain leverage over NEGATIVE thoughts.

If you find yourself struggle with the same negative thoughts/limiting beliefs, here’s what I suggest you do:

  1. Make a list of reoccurring negative thoughts and limiting beliefs
  2. For each thought/belief, write down a positive AFFIRMATION that you will remember. Write out that affirmation EVERY day for the next 21 days.
  3. Every time that negative thought or belief comes to mind, repeat the affirmation to yourself 10 times. When your first starting at, I encourage quoting the affirmation out load when possible. If the negative thought or limiting belief is about YOU specifically, rather than a particular situation/scenario, practice quoting the affirmations to yourself as you look at your reflection in the mirror. Another idea you can try; record yourself repeating the affirmations 10+ times and then listen to the recordings as you meditate (use headphones for best experience).

The more you do this, the EASIER it will become to RECOGNIZE (awareness) the negative thoughts/limiting beliefs and to COMBAT it.

To hit the RESET button on 2020, we must shift our THINKING/PERSPECTIVE of ourselves and of 2020.. IF you shift your mindset, you’ll be able to see the OPPORTUNITIES that may come as a result of the challenges we have and currently are facing. For example, many people have had a SIDE-HUSTLE or business idea that they’ve been wanting to start, but have yet to start because of their limiting belief that they CAN’T because they don’t have enough time. Those who have shifted there focus enough to see an opportunity have already started working on their business idea because they SEE the opportunity of TIME. Even if temporary, they have time NOW to START and to strategize a plan that will allow them to continue their pursuit AFTER things begin to return back to normal.

The fact is, we are living in chaotic, uncomfortable and uncertain times. BUT, even in this there is still HOPE and OPPORTUNITY. If you make the decide to shift your mindset, you will see it.

Goal Success Challenge: Day 7 – Identify & Create Positive Reinforcement

Welcome to Day 7 of the Goal Success Challenge!

For 1 week we’ve tackled 7 steps to setting and slaying our goals! We’ve begun to position ourselves for success in 2020!

We began by visualizing what our ideal life looks like. Then, we got clear on what goals we need to set and what steps we need to take to manifest our dream life. After which, we set strategic smart goals and created a plan of action – by breaking down our goal into small goals, identifying limitations and limiting beliefs and identifying possible solutions or alternatives. That eliminates any excuses upfront, for not getting started!

Don’t let 2020 be a repeat of 2019.

And, please, don’t transition into the New Year without a game plan!

Yes, you will face challenges in 2020. Yes, you will have a few disappointments and may experience a few setbacks. That’s life. But, with a positive mindset and a game plan, you can eliminate unnecessary or “extra” negativity from popping up.

Today, we are covering the final step on our Goal Success Checklist. We are going to identify and create positive reinforcement.

Identify WHO and WHAT will hold you accountable, motivate and remind you to pursue your goals.

Examples:

– Find an accountability partner

– Hire a coach or mentor

– Create a vision board/book

Choose/set as many as you need! And remember, what works for me, may not work for you, so choose what works for you!

If you were to be graded on the discipline you have in your life, would you score a 90% or above? Be honest. If the answer is no, then you need some form of accountability in your life.

There are many “smaller” ways to hold yourself accountable. I try to do so, as much as possible. It’s as simple as setting a date for your goals and each individual action step you take or keeping track of your goals and deadlines on a calendar/planner or Habit Tracker App.

Maybe you want to hire a coach or mentor, but don’t know where to look or can’t afford one at the moment. Like any goal, that would be considered a limitation. There is a solution or alternative, even when lack of money is the issue. You can start small. Start with books, YouTube videos by subject matter experts, etc. You may not be able to take the magnitude of steps that you want to right off the bat, but progress is progress. So, as long as you are CONSISTENTLY making moves that are in alignment with your goal, you’re good!

We have reached the end of the goal success challenge! I hope that you feel more prepared to slay your goals in 2020! You have the strategy to slay your goals in 2020. A strategy that works. But, here’s the thing… it WILL NOT work IF you do not have the RIGHT Mindset. This challenge has been all about providing you with the RIGHT GOAL & the RIGHT PLAN. But, my friend, if you don’t have the right minds.. A positive success “growth” mindset that looks for possibility when their appears to be none.. A mindset that is rooted in discipline and consistency.. A mindset where YOU believe that your goal IS possible… it won’t work.

The strategy works, if you make it work. It’s that simple.

The Reason Why You’re Better Off Imperfect

Perfectionism can be a silent killer of dreams. Many people fail to pursue their goals because they allow perfectionism to hinder their progress. I’d like to refrain from painting the idea of perfectionism in a bad light, because in some aspects, perfectionism can be a positive thing. For instance, striving for perfection is a sign that you may have a success “growth” mindset. It means that you see room for improvement and therefore you are open for opportunities of growth and expansion. It’s also a good thing, because it’s likely that you desire to present quality content, products or whatever it is that you are working on.

There is nothing wrong with setting high standards for yourself. However, like anything else, there is a thin line that is easy to cross, if you’re not careful. If you’re not careful, your reason or excuse for not getting started, putting yourself out there or releasing your gift to the world can quickly turn into perfectionism. And, at the end of the day, all it is, is an excuse. Allow me to keep it real with you today. If you’ve put in the work, whether on yourself or on your project, whatever it may be, don’t continue to allow perfection to hinder you from launching any longer. Don’t strive to be perfect. Because, we don’t all define perfection the same. So, when it’s finally “perfect” in your eyes, I guarantee, someone, somewhere will have a differing opinion. So please, cut yourself some slack. Work hard, but don’t over think it.

If you’ve been putting off taking the next big step because you feel you’re not ready or things are not as good as they can be, consider this: You are better off imperfect. And, here’s why; Your flaws and imperfections is a blessing in disguise. Just as you are, you will attract those who are in alignment with your purpose. This means that, you and what you have to offer is not meant for everybody. It’s not perfect for EVERYBODY but it is perfect for SOMEBODY. Somebody will be drawn to you or your product because it’s meant for them, those who it is not for, or who aren’t ready for it will overlook it. They will take the opportunity for granted. So, I encourage you to embrace the flaws and all. See the beauty in the imperfection, and even if you don’t quite see it, launch anyway. Take that leap of faith, step outside of your comfort zone – pursue your goals, live your dream and live your life operating in your God given purpose!
